The City of Visalia's Engineering Division is part of the Public
Works Department and serves the community by providing a wide range
of engineering services such as project and construction
management, surveying, traffic engineering, encroachment permits,
and inspection. The Division is responsible for the development and
implementation of municipal infrastructure projects through the
City's adopted multi-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that
includes a broad spectrum of CIP projects. The division's staff of
engineers, technicians, surveyors, inspectors, and administrative
staff are committed to customer service, safety, and providing
high-quality engineering support and services to the public and
other City Departments.
Examples of Duties
We are recruiting for a Civil Engineer. The selected Engineer
will be responsible for project delivery of multiple capital
improvement projects, and shall assist with the various tasks
required of the Engineering Division. Delivery of projects includes
but is not limited to project management, construction management,
engineering design, utility coordination, agency coordination,
funding management, right-of-way procurement, public outreach, cost
estimation, specification writing, project scheduling, consultant
procurement (RFP's), contractor procurement (RFB's), reporting, and
similar type work. The Engineer will be expected to coordinate and
work collaboratively with other departments and divisions. Other
responsibilities include engineering research, City Council
presentations, and public assistance.
Qualifications / Requirements
The ideal candidate will possess a high level of
professionalism, sound knowledge of engineering and construction
management principles, customer service skills, and a demonstrated
track record of successfully completing projects. The position
requires excellent judgement, integrity, and organizational skills.
The ideal candidate will be a self-driven individual, willing to
take on new challenges, flexibility to function in either a project
or construction management role, and able to effectively
communicate with coworkers, supervisors, support staff, and outside
stakeholders to successfully deliver projects. The ideal candidate
will have municipal engineering experience in areas such as project
and construction management, storm water, sanitary sewer, pavement,
traffic, street lighting, fiber optics, trails, parks, Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, and municipal buildings.
Knowledge in municipal work such as procurement methods, state and
federal requirements, and local government policy and procedures is
highly desirable. The ideal candidate may have a demonstrated area
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that
could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is
qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and
abilities would be:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a BS
degree in civil engineering or related field.
- Four (4) years of increasingly responsible civil engineering
- Valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Civil
Engineer in the State of California. If hired with a valid
Certificate of Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer from
another state, you will have one year from date of appointment to
obtain your Certificate of Registration in California.
